Organisational Reviews: A Powerful Tool in a Changing Environment
Today’s world is constantly changing. Artificial intelligence, climate shifts, digital connectivity and rising community expectations are just some of the forces reshaping how we work.
In order to remain relevant and effective, organisations need to consider how these forces will impact them and their response. Organisational reviews provide an effective approach in understanding and aligning internal systems with a changing environment, addressing the gap between current realities and a desired future and setting the organisation on a course for success.
A review is not a one-off exercise
One of the biggest misperceptions when it comes to organisational reviews, is that it happens once and it’s done. As organisations operate within constantly changing environments, they need to remain agile in order to adapt and remain relevant. To ensure the organisation is guided in an evidence-based way, regular reviews are needed to ensure a clear pathway for its future.
“A compelling narrative engages the hearts and minds – without it, a review is read as a technical or structural exercise.”
Communication is the deciding factor
Perhaps the most important factor when undertaking an organisational review is how you are communicating with stakeholders. One of the most common mistakes I have seen by those undertaking a review, is failing to communicate a clear ‘why’. Having a compelling narrative helps engage the ‘hearts and minds’ and assists in people’s understanding of the purpose of the review, rather than it being perceived as a technical or structural exercise. It is imperative that leaders clearly articulate the expected outcomes and strategic vision.
Equally, poor communication can also adversely impact an organisational review with rumours often ‘filling the void’. Having consistent, transparent communication, and two-way engagement is important throughout the review to be effective.
In this respect, having an independent, objective and capable partner assisting in guiding and facilitating your organisational review can be an effective approach.
